Go the distance for China’s meat trade dogs

This October, give yourself a healthy boost while helping meat trade dogs live a long and happy life!

Go The Distance is our new challenge event, where you make your miles count. Run, walk, swim or cycle up to 100 miles (or more if you dare!) over October and raise vital funds to help us rescue China’s meat trade dogs.

How to get involved:

  1. Choose how you’re going to do it: Run, walk, swim, cycle, or a mix of them. Raise the fun with something completely different… bear crawl? hop?!
  2. Pick your distance: 10, 25, 50, 100 miles… or more! Your distance should be a challenge for you personally. State it proudly when you set up your Facebook fundraiser page.
  3. Most importantly, join our Facebook group and set up your Facebook fundraising page (instructions below), then share it so friends and family can sponsor you!

It couldn’t be easier to take part. Follow the instructions below and start fundraising! Then, in October, get out there and cover your miles. Take plenty of photos, join in the chat on the Facebook group and share progress updates with your friends and family.

Signing up is free!

About Candy Cane Rescue

We rescue greyhounds and other dogs from slaughter houses, meat trucks and underground racetracks in China. Our network of vets and kennels in Beijing help them recover before we fly them out. Since Candy Cane began 5 years ago, over 500 meat trade dogs have found loving new families in the UK and USA.

Most meat trade dogs have never experienced affection before, only abuse.  We make sure they feel safe and loved as soon as come into our care. Despite what they’ve been through, these plucky survivors transform from scared animals into happy, loving and trusting pets.

We’re a small charity dependent on donations. By taking on this challenge you’ll be helping to pay essential vets and kennels costs, as well for the dogs’ flights out of China so they can find their forever home.

From all of us at Candy Cane Rescue, thank you so much.

Anyone! It’s open to all abilities. So long as you’ve got the time to get active during October you can take part, get fitter, feel better and help meat trade dogs while you do it!

I just signed up – what now?

That’s fantastic!

First join our Facebook Group for info, tips and to see how your fellow fundraisers are doing.

Then set up your Facebook fundraiser. It already has some text about Candy Cane Rescue  but feel free to personalise it to share why you’re doing it or how far you’re going.

Can under 18s join the Facebook Group?

No, sorry. To join the Facebook Group or set up a Facebook fundraiser, you need to be over 18. If you want to take part and are under 18 you can fundraise through JustGiving – but ask a parent or guardian.

How much does it cost?

It’s free to sign up and take part but we encourage you to fundraise by getting people to sponsor you.

Every penny you raise will be helping to give meat trade dogs in China the chance of a long and happy life.

Raise £200 or more and you’ll get a Candy Cane Rescue T Shirt.

What if I don't complete the challenge?

The only thing that matters is that you challenge yourself. Do as much as you can. Every mile helps.

What happens when I’ve finished?

You’ll be able to download a digital medal and certificate in the Facebook Group.

Who moderates the group?

Candy Cane staff moderate the group and are on hand to answer any questions you might have.

How do I raise money?

Facebook Fundraisers are the easiest way to raise money. You can set one up in a few seconds. Then it’s a doddle to share the page with your Facebook friends!

Can people donate who don’t have Facebook?

Of course. You just have to take the donation directly from them and add it to your own page.

Can I create a team Facebook fundraiser?

Yes. Create your Facebook fundraiser and then if click edit organisers on the fundraiser to add your team members.

They will then be able to edit the fundraising page and add comments.

Can I raise money on JustGiving or another platform?

We’d prefer you raise the money through Facebook Fundraisers but if that doesn’t work for you it’s not a problem. Click here to set up a JustGiving page.

My Facebook Fundraiser page says it’s closed, why?

Facebook Fundraisers are automatically set to end after two weeks. Just go to https:/www.facebook.com/fundraisers/manage

Click on ‘Edit Fundraiser’ and go to ‘When should my fundraiser end’ and change the date to 31st October 2021.

How much do I have to raise?

There is no minimum fundraising requirement to take part, we just ask that you raise what you can to support Candy Cane Rescue.

If you’d like a target to aim for, we suggest setting £150 as your target but it is completely your choice.

Can I just raise money offline with a sponsorship form?

If you would like a sponsorship form please email us at [email protected]

How do I pay in offline sponsorship?

You can pay the money directly into our bank account:

Donate to us using PayPal

Or send us a cheque. If you’d like to do this just email at [email protected] for details.

Also remember to scan and email us your completed sponsorship form. This is important so we can collect Gift Aid.

How do I track my distance?

Strava and Mapmyrun are some great, free apps you can use. You can also use Google Maps to roughly work out the distance you want to do.

Remember, to post updates on your Facebook Fundraiser so your friends and family see how hard you’re pushing yourself!

Do I need to provide evidence to the charity that I’ve completed my distance?

No – we trust you!  But helping your family and friends keep track of your progress on your fundraising page is important.

If you can share videos and photos, then do, and the more the better!
